Sinularia - Corals for Beginners

Unlike stone corals, leather and soft corals do not develop a calcium-carbonate skeleton. Therefore, they are much more tolerant towards calcium and alkalinity fluctuations. Soft corals are perfect candidates for beginners and for aquarists who don't (want to) watch the water parameters meticulously.

Why do soft corals like Sinularia close their polyps from time to time?

Many soft and leather corals "shed their skin" periodically. During that time, you can't see the polyps, and the corals have a smooth and shiny surface. Then, the Sinularia needs enough current so that the upper layer of tissue (which is used to remove residues for example) can come off. The polyps are also hidden after transport, at night, or when you put them in a new place.

High nutrient values? No problem for soft corals!

Leather and soft corals can handle high nutrient concentrations well. Phosphate concentrations up to 0.2 mg/l and nitrate concentrations up to 20 mg/l are still acceptable. That's why they're perfect for new or small reef tanks and for socialization with fish.
