Leather corals - corals for beginners in the reef hobby

Unlike stony corals, soft corals do not form a solid skeleton of calcium carbonate. They are therefore more tolerant of fluctuations in calcium concentration and alkalinity. Leather corals are perfect candidates for beginners in the reef hobby as well as for aquarists who do not (want to) pay meticulous attention to their water parameters.

Colorful Lobophytum leather corals need more light

Green or yellow leather corals need a lot of light to keep their beautiful coloration. Therefore position them in well lit areas of your aquarium.

High nutrient levels? No problem for soft corals!

Soft corals cope well with increased nutrient concentrations. Phosphate concentrations of up to 0.2 mg/l and nitrate concentrations of up to 20 mg/l are considered quite acceptable. They are therefore not only ideal for a new set up or small reef aquarium, but also for tanks with a heavy fish load. Please note that colorful soft corals can temporarily lose their intense colors if nutrient levels are high.
