Acanthastrea & Micromussa – fleshy colors for your reef tank
These popular LPS corals (large polyp stony corals) are not only real eye-catchers, but also perfect for aquarists who value robust but slow-growing corals. Their large, fleshy polyps are not only a visual highlight, but also a sure sign that there is plenty of vitality at play here.
Why Acan & Micromussa are so popular in aquariums
- Pure color variety – from bright red to neon green to rainbow patterns.
- Slow-growing – perfect for structured tanks and aquarists with patience.
- Ideal for areas with low light – they feel particularly at home in the lower third of your aquarium.
- Feeding required – they are happiest when fed mysis, plankton, or special coral pellets.
Care & Tips for Saltwater Aquarium Owners
Acanthastrea and Micromussa originate from the Indo-Pacific and prefer calmer zones with gentle currents. In the aquarium, you should therefore give them a place with medium to low lighting – they do not feel comfortable directly under the LED spotlight. They will thank you with fluffed-up polyps that literally “beg” for food.
Extra tip: if your Acan or Micromussa extends its tentacles in the evening, it's showtime for feeding. Regular spot feeding sessions not only promote growth, but also make the colors shine even more intensely..
Fun Fact
Did you know that the well-known Acanthastrea lordhowensis is now correctly listed as Micromussa lordhowensis? Science aside, in the hobby world they remain simply “Acan Lords” for many. It just sounds cooler.
