Snails are excellent algae grazers. They crawl leisurely through the reef tank every day, diligently rasping algae deposits off the glass, pumps and rocks. They don't disdain food scraps either, which end up in the snail's stomach with relish. Together with sea urchins, brittle stars and the like, they form the so-called cleaning crew and ensure a clean and algae-free reef aquarium.
How many snails should you actually keep in your saltwater aquarium? As a general rule we recommend one algae grazer per 5 - 10 liters of water volume. The snails should not only be introduced when an algae phase breaks out, but preferably beforehand. In this way, unwanted algae are controlled from the beginning.
