Coralaxy – that’s us

We do not want to instruct you, nor do we want to demand that you stock your aquarium exclusively with captive-bred fish and farmed corals. We are well aware that stocking a reef aquarium exclusively with aquacultured specimen is currently still difficult and that they are not always available. Nevertheless, we would like to encourage you to critically question the origin of your animals and, where possible, to use aquacultured reef inhabitants.

Lukas, Jo, Johannes, Diane & Norman

With Coralaxy, we want to contribute to make the reef hobby more sustainable and transparent for private reefers. Our goal is to increase the availability, acceptance and aquaculture of marine ornamental species in Germany and Europe and to continuously expand the range of it for marine aquariums.

Coralaxy GmbH was founded in 2018 by Jo and Diane in Rostock, Germany. We planned the facility by ourselves and built it within a year. The online shop was created at the same time. In August 2019 we started with the first sales to private reef tank owners.

Coral Farm with separate quarantine area

The basic structure of the system can be divided into 3 areas; (1) the quarantine area, (2) the coral farming facilities and (3) the fish keeping. The total volume is around 20,000 liters, which is distributed over 7 recirculation systems. The filter units were developed in cooperation with the company AquaCare & Co. KG and differ in their equipment between the coral systems (e.g. more filter columns) and fish systems (e.g. UV system).

The coral farm tanks and fish keeping are distributed across a total of 4 recirculation systems, each with a volume of 2500 to 4500 liters. For the lighting and flow of the coral systems, we chose products from EcoTech Marine. The lights and pumps are adjusted according to the specific requirements of the corals in each tank.

In 2021, we expanded from 100 m² to around 200 m². The adjacent additional hall was used primarily for the expansion of the shipping area, a warehouse, workshop and office. In the meantime, we also held a factory outlet here for aquarists from the region. In addition, the first plankton culturing tanks were started and photo and work tanks were set up.

In 2024, we expanded the facility area again to include an additional cultivation room of around 40 m². The space is intended exclusively for the cultivation of plankton, shrimp, snails, sea urchins and macroalgae and is currently in progress.

Today, we not only supply private saltwater aquarists, but also institutes, universities, public aquariums as well as specialist and wholesalers throughout Europe. If you are interested in our B2B conditions, send us an email to info@coralaxy.de

Jo has been a reef hobbiest since he was 14 years old. He studied aquaculture before founding the company. He is a trained scientific diver and has previous experience in coral taxonomy (German Oceanographic Museum Stralsund), research projects (SECORE Foundation, Curacao) and aquaristic companies (Tropic Marin).

  • Diane

Co-founder and responsible for everything, but especially for the online shop, marketing, customer service and shipping.

Before founding the company, Diane studied aquaculture. She is a trained scientific diver and has previously gained experience in institutes (Center for Tropical Marine Ecology, Bremen), public aquariums (Zoo-Aquarium Berlin, Ozeaneum Stralsund) and aquaculture companies (Proaquatix, USA).

  • Lukas

Lukas has been working at Coralaxy since November 2020. He puts all his knowledge and heart and soul into the cultivation of zooplankton, shrimp, sea urchins and snails.

Lukas studied aquaculture, kept a private reef tank and has already gained a lot of experience in aquaculture operations, including at Bocas Mariculture in Panama.

  • Johannes

Since the beginning of 2023, Johannes has been actively supporting us in shipping, coral fragmentation and facility routine alongside his studies in biology and aquaculture.

Johannes also owns a reef tank at home, worked in an aquarium store during his school days and is a passionate fisherman.

  • Norman

Norman joined the Coralaxy team at the end of 2023 and enriches us with his experience in science and craftsmanship alike. He is mainly responsible for macroalgae and phytoplankton cultivation as well as facility routine.

Norman studied biology and did some research on biofilters in aquaculture, among other things. He later founded the first zero waste shop in Rostock. In addition to his work with us, Norman refurbishes old pieces of furniture and works on vintage cars.
