Phosphate - what is it?
Phosphate, together with nitrate, is one of the macronutrients.
Where does the phosphate in my aquarium come from?
Phosphate is usually introduced through feed. But dying organisms, contaminated water, sand or rock can also lead to an increase in values. Calcium reactors that run on coral rubble are also a source of phosphate.
Why is the determination of phosphate important?
High phosphate concentrations can lead to undesirable algae growth. They also have negative effects on the growth and color of corals. You should therefore ensure that the phosphate concentration in your reef aquarium is in the range of 0.01 - 0.05 mg/l.
Despite the negative aspects listed, you must not forget that phosphate or phosphorus is a vital nutrient. A long-term lack of phosphate will inevitably lead to the death of your corals.
