Chalice corals are among the most fascinating LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals that you can add to your saltwater aquarium. Their bizarre-looking growth forms and shimmering colours make them real eye-catchers - they unfold their fluorescent magic especially in low light. These corals are perfect for anyone looking for something special without having to replace the entire lighting system.
Buying Chalice corals – our tip:
When selecting your chalice, make sure that they look healthy, which means, that they are well expanded and show no tissue damage. They may need some time to acclimatise when they are new to the aquarium - so be patient and don't readjust the water parameters straight away!
How to care for Chalice corals:
There are a few things to bear in mind to ensure that your chalice becomes the star of your tank:
1. Light:
Chalice corals like shady to moderately lit areas. Place them in a sheltered spot in the lower or middle section of your aquarium. Too much light? They will respond with pale colours. Their fluorescent colours really come into effect under blue light or LED lamps with a high proportion of actinic light.
2. Flow:
A gentle, indirect flow is ideal. Chalice do not like being hit directly by the water - this could damage their delicate tissue. Make sure that no debris or sediment settles on their surface, as this can stress and even damage the coral.
3. Water Parameters:
Like all LPS corals, Chalice are not necessarily sensitive, but stable water values are a must:
- Salinity: 1,023 – 1,025
- Temperature: 24–26 °C
- pH: 8,0 – 8,4
- Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH
- Calcium: 400 – 450 mg/l
- Magnesium: 1300 – 1400 mg/l
4. Feeding:
Chalice corals benefit from regular feeding. They love fine, powdery coral food or plankton substitutes. Feed them in the evening or when the lights are switched off - then they open their polyps and are ready to catch small snacks.
Chalice in the Reefscape – Tips for Placement
Chalice corals are like works of art for your aquarium. Place them on flat ledges or in a shady corner where they can spread out undisturbed. Keep your distance from aggressive or fast-growing corals - Chalice like their space and appreciate a few centimetres of safe distance.
Conclusion: Mystic beauty for your reef
Chalice corals are a wonderful choice for saltwater aquarists who are looking for something out of the ordinary. They bring elegance, a blaze of colour and a touch of mystery to your tank - and they are comparatively easy to keep. With a little patience and the right care, you will be rewarded with a coral that stands out from the crowd and constantly reveals new details.
Enjoy discovering and caring for your chalice!
