Favites corals are the perfect choice for anyone who wants to bring contrasting colours and an exciting texture to their marine aquarium. These fascinating starter LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals grow flat and compact and are therefore ideal for giving your reef a stylish yet natural look.
Easy to care for, but with style: How to keep Favites corals
Favites are tough and therefore also suitable for beginners who want to gain their first experience with LPS corals. They are not overly demanding as long as their basic needs are met:
- Light: Favites prefer medium lighting conditions. Good LED lighting with a balanced spectrum - ideally with an emphasis on blue - ensures that their colours shine particularly brightly. Place them in the middle section of the aquarium to fulfil their needs.
- Flow: These shallow-growing beauties love a gentle to moderate flow. Too much water movement stresses them and prevents their polyps from fully developing.
- Water Parameters: As with all LPS corals, stable water parameters are crucial. Keep the salinity at 1.023-1.025, the temperature at 23-26 °C and the pH value at 8.0-8.4. A sufficient supply of calcium (400-450 mg/l), magnesium (1200-1350 mg/l) and alkalinity (7-10 dKH) is also important for healthy growth.
Our Tip: Acclimatise slowly
Favites react sensitively to sudden changes. If you place a new coral in the tank, give it time to acclimatise. Place it in a shadier spot at first and increase the light intensity over several days. This will prevent stress and ensure that it can develop optimally.
Placement in the tank - where Favites will look best
Favites corals are particularly effective when placed on flat stones or in areas with a lot of free space. Their high-contrast play of colours magically attracts attention and sets accents without being obtrusive. Combining them with other LPS such as Euphyllia or soft corals creates a harmonious, varied picture.
Feeding and promoting growth
Like many corals, favites live from symbiosis with zooxanthellae, but can also be fed additionally. A weekly dose of fine coral food or plankton-like particles will support their growth and colourfulness. Take care not to overfeed in order to keep the water quality stable.
Concluison: Favites – Beginner-friendly and colourful!
Favites corals are a great choice for reef tanks - whether you are just starting out or are already an experienced hobbyist. With their robust character, easy maintenance and intense colours, they are guaranteed to be a highlight in your tank.Enjoy keeping and being fascinated!
