A little gem for your reef tank! The Rainford's goby (Koumansetta rainfordi) is a colourful, peaceful reef inhabitant that not only pleases the eye, but also nibbles diligently on algae coverings and chews through the sand. At a maximum of 8 cm, it remains manageable and fits perfectly into well-established tanks of 150 litres or more. Its shy nature requires a few hiding places between reef rocks - but with a little patience you will be able to observe it time and time again doing its useful cleaning work!

A small colorful highlight with a useful function

The Rainford's goby is a real eye-catcher! Its olive-coloured body is adorned with bright orange stripes, making it a real gem in the marine aquarium. But it doesn't just have a lot to offer visually: It actively helps to keep algae deposits on rocks in check and filters fine sand in search of food - all without messing up the tank!

Food requirements: Gourmet with a preference for algae

Koumansetta rainfordi is an omnivore with a preference for benthic microorganisms such as Tigriopus or Tisbe copepods. It loves to forage for food between stones and therefore requires a well-established substrate - it is all the happier with a light coating of algae and occasional filamentous algae. Our aquacultured fish are food-safe and also like fine frozen food such as Cyclops or Artemia - the main thing is that it is small enough!

Keeping: Space for retreats

This petite fish is rather reserved and needs quiet tankmates. Too much hustle and bustle in the tank stresses it out. A reef structure with sufficient crevices and caves is essential for it to feel safe. Although it can also be kept as a pair or in small groups, it feels comfortable on its own (and this species is often found as a loner in the wild) - ideal for aquarists who are only looking for a single bottom dweller!

Tip: Jump guard & fine substrate

Like many gobies, the Rainford's goby tends to jump out of the tank in panic. A cover or a close-meshed net is therefore recommended. The substrate should also be fine enough so that it can search for food easily. Sand that is too coarse or even sharp-edged gravel would be counterproductive.

Conclusion: A must for lovers of well-kept sand bottom

Whether as an algae eater, gentle sand filter or simply as a visual highlight - the Rainford's goby is an enrichment for any reef aquarium from 150 litres upwards. With the right food supply and a stress-free environment, it will give you pleasure for a long time!
