Buy LPS corals - our tip:
Here you will only find aquarium-grown frags - no wild-caught specimens! Unfortunately, many LPS coral species are still taken from the sea because they are slower to reproduce. We consistently focus on sustainability and species diversity from the aquarium - good for your tank, even better for the reef.
What are LPS corals?
LPS stands for Large Polyp Stony Corals. Compared to SPS corals, they have significantly larger, often fleshy polyps, which in some species even sway elegantly in the water - almost mesmerizing! The best-known genera include:
- Euphyllia - with wagging tentacles that bring life to the reef
- Acanthastrea - compact, colorful and great for reef design
- Goniopora - fascinating due to their long, flower-like polyps
- Blastomussa, Lobophyllia & Co. - real color wonders with substance
Keeping & care: LPS - the more relaxed stony corals
Light requirements
- Less is more: LPS require significantly less light than SPS
- Perfect for the middle to lower areas of the reef tank
- Tip: Slowly get used to stronger lighting, especially with LEDs with a high blue component - this makes the colors glow!
Flow
- Moderate, indirect flow is ideal
- Too strong a current = offended polyps
- Too little movement = deposits, and they don't like that at all
Placement
- Ideal for near the bottom, reef bases or quieter areas between SPS colonies
- Sometimes strong cnidarian power and long fighting tentacles - so keep your distance
- Particularly good in aquariums with lots of fish, as they are more tolerant of high nutrients
Colors, shapes & growth
LPS corals score with intense color combinations - from neon to pastel, from marbled to brightly monochrome. Although they grow more slowly than their SPS relatives, they are more robust, less sensitive to fluctuations and provide visual highlights with movement - especially species such as Euphyllia & Goniopora.
