How to care for Montipora

Montiporas are usually more robust than other SPS corals and are therefore perfect for beginners in the SPS world - especially Montipora digitata. More demanding species require a little more experience, but will reward you with breathtaking colours and stable growth.

Care instructions for Montipora:

1. Light requirements:

Montipora corals require medium to strong light (PAR 200-400, sometimes up to 500). Blue components in the lighting bring out their fluorescent colours to optimum effect. The colourful Montipora in particular can sometimes tolerate very strong light.

2. Flow:

A moderate to strong flow is important for the health of your Montipora. It ensures a good supply of nutrients and prevents tissue damage. Make sure that no sediment deposits can form on plate-shaped species such as capricornis. The flat-growing Montipora can generally tolerate most currents, while the Montipora with more fragile skeletons should be exposed to somewhat more moderate flow.

3. Water parameters:
The following values are recommended for stable conditions:

•     Temperature: 24-27 °C
•     KH: 7-9 dKH
•     Calcium: 400-450 mg/l
•     Magnesium: 1250-1500 mg/l
•     Nitrate: 2-10 mg/l
•     Phosphate: 0.03-0.08 mg/l

4. Feeding:
Montiporas live mainly on light energy, but benefit from occasional supplementary feeding with fine coral food, amino acids or zooplankton such as cyclops or rotifers - ideally 2x per week.

5. Placement:
Montiporas are best placed in the middle to upper area of your reef. Plating species should be placed in such a way that they do not shade other corals as they grow. Bear in mind that Montipora only have a low nettling power and should therefore be kept at a safe distance from nettling species.

6. Care & control:
Regular water testing and stable conditions are crucial for long-term health. Use gentle coral dips as a preventative measure against possible pests when moving in.

Propagating Montipora - simple and sustainable
Is your Montipora growing vigorously? Then you can easily fragment it - e.g. with a coral saw and some reef glue. This way you can spread your favourite coral in the tank or pass on frags to other aquarists.
