Brachionus - why it is so popular as larval food

Brachionus is often used as a first food in fish farming. In addition to the high reproduction rate and wide tolerance in terms of water parameters, the small size and planktonic lifestyle are particularly advantageous. Brachionus also move relatively slowly and are therefore easy to catch as prey for fish larvae. Although the rotifer itself does not have an optimal nutrient or fatty acid profile, it can be easily enriched with valuable ingredients as a filter feeder.
