The Banggai cardinalfish is one of the most popular fish in marine aquariums. The silvery body with characteristic black and white coloring and bright spots is typical for this species. A very sociable marine fish that is especially active in the evening hours.

Pterapogon kauderni - a marine fish for aquariums from 200 liters

Banggai cardinalfish can be well cared for in aquariums of 200 liters or more. A structured reef structure with numerous hiding places is ideal for the animals. Cardinalfish are active at dusk and are mainly present in the aquarium during the evening hours. The animals should also be fed during this time. The cardinalfish is not picky and prefers to eat small to medium-sized frozen foods.

Banggai cardinalfish are mouthbrooders

If you keep Banggai cardinalfish in pairs, sooner or later you will see the male stop eating and his mouth grows bigger and bigger. The reason: Pterapogon kauderni is a mouthbrooder and carries the young in its throat until they hatch. You should definitely try breeding the "Kaudernis" (as some aquarists affectionately call them) yourself, because the young are already relatively big and have a very good chance of survival.

The socialization of Pterapogon kauderni

We recommend keeping them in pairs. We advise against keeping them in groups, as aggressive behavior can occur between adult members of the same species and in the end there will most likely be only two left. Banggai cardinalfish are otherwise calm fish and can be kept well with other fish in a reef aquarium.
