Decorative calcareous green algae. Ideal for display tanks.

In contrast to other macroalgae,HalimedaUsually left alone by herbivorous fish such as shad. The reason for this is probably the rather unappetizing calcium deposits.

Ideal for:

  • Reef tanks with increased nutrient levels
  • Aquariums with herbivorous fish
  • moderate - intensely lit areas

You will receive an algae that is at least 5 cm long, if possible already attached to a piece of coral.

May look pale upon arrival, but the green color returns quickly.

More Information

Halimeda , also known as "calcareous algae" or "sprout algae", is a fascinating marine algae belonging to the Bryopsidaceae family. It is one of the few species of algae that deposits calcium carbonate in its cell walls, giving it a solid, coral-like structure. Due to its unique appearance and its role in the ecosystem, Halimeda is highly prized in both natural reefs and marine aquariums.

Halimeda forms flat, segmented leaves that often look like a chain of small, round to oval plates. These segments are light green to dark green and feel slightly chalky due to the calcium they contain. Depending on the species and conditions, the algae can reach a height of 10 to 30 cm and often grows in clumps.

In marine aquariums, Halimeda is a popular choice for reef tanks as it is not only visually attractive, but also helps to stabilize the pH and provides a natural source of calcium in the water. It also provides hiding places for small fish and invertebrates and supports biological balance.

Special care

Halimeda is a reef-building marine algae and, like corals, stores calcium. A sufficient supply of calcium and carbonate is therefore a prerequisite for the successful care of this pretty algae.
