More Information
Perfect for:
- New aquariums (controlled start-up)
- Quarantine tanks
- Fish-only systems
- Aquarists who want maximum control over nitrogen dynamics
Why ammonium chloride?
The targeted use of ammonium chloride mimics the natural nitrogen input through uneaten food and excretions – without endangering real animals. This allows the start-up phase to be safely simulated and monitored. An ideal tool for aquarists who prefer a well-thought-out, clean start – without the uncertainty of traditional methods.
What happens chemically?
During the initial run, ammonium chloride is used to deliberately introduce ammonium (NH₄⁺) into the system. The starter bacteria (e.g., from tank starter 1) first convert this into nitrite (NO₂⁻) and then into nitrate (NO₃⁻) – the goal is a stable, closed nitrogen cycle.
Step-by-step instructions for reef tanks
Day 1:
- Start with an ammonium concentration of approximately 4 mg/l (→ 4 ml of Tank Starter 2 per 100 l of water)
- Add Tank Starter 1 at the same time (double dosage recommended)
Days 2–5:
- Measure ammonium daily
- As soon as the level drops, also measure nitrite
Days 5–10:
- If nitrite is visible, also measure nitrate
- If nitrate is rising, biological degradation is taking place
Days 10–21:
- Monitor levels, add more ammonium if necessary
- If ammonium and nitrite are undetectable for 3 consecutive days: The aquarium is safe to stock!
