Tridacna from aquaculture
The Tridacna mussels offered here come from an aquaculture farm in Micronesia. They are not only bred and exported there for aquarium purposes, but are also planted locally in the reefs in order to "reforest" the natural stocks.
Important information about keeping Tridacna mussels in a saltwater aquarium
Avoid placing Tridacna directly on the sandy bottom. Instead, choose a mussel holder or coarse coral rubble as a base. The chosen spot should get plenty of light, while a moderate current is perfectly adequate. Keep corals that sting heavily far away from the Tridacna . We advise against keeping them with cleaner wrasse or pincer fish. In addition to the placement in the aquarium, the calcium balance is particularly important. Therefore, keep an eye on the carbonate hardness, magnesium and calcium in particular and adjust them regularly.
Which Tridacna is right for me?
In addition to the attractiveness of each individual mussel, the requirements and the expected final size play a role in the selection. In general, the bred Tridacna offered here are significantly more robust and therefore easier to care for than their wild counterparts. Tridacna crocea and Hippopus hippopus are particularly recommended for beginners. The former remains relatively small with an expected final size of 15 cm. Next in the size table is Tridacna maxima with a maximum of around 25 cm. Hippopus and Tridacna squamosa can grow to a similar size of up to 40 cm. Tridacna derasa can grow twice as large. Giant clams, however, grow very slowly in the aquarium and are already 2-3 years old at a size of 3-6 cm.
