Biological stability through zooplankton
A healthy microfauna is the basis of every functioning reef aquarium. Our zooplankton mix provides you with a lively combination of different copepod species that promote the biological balance and serve as a high-quality food source for many saltwater inhabitants. Our mix is a real game changer, especially when starting a tank, in the event of algae problems or for rearing sensitive fish larvae.
The five stars of our zooplankton mix:
Tigriopus sp.
Large, benthic copepods that also move in open water - ideal for nano gobies, dragonets, pipefish and other gourmets. They store astaxanthin, a natural pigment that contributes to the colouration and health of your animals. A real superfood!
Tisbe sp.
These benthic copepods live on rock, glass and substrate and help to utilise algae coatings and detritus - a perfect addition to the cleaning crew. They are also a favourite food source for dragonets and pipefish.
Parvocalanus sp.
Pelagic copepods with very small nauplii - the perfect first food for fish larvae in marine aquaculture. Float actively in the open water and are therefore also ingested by sensitive filter feeders.
Apocyclops sp.
The all-rounder: Supports biological cleaning, provides food for fish and corals and helps to build up a stable microfauna. Particularly effective when restarting the aquarium or for larval rearing.
Brachionus sp.
Tiny, planktonic rotifers - ideal as first food for fish larvae. They move slowly, are easy to catch and can be easily enriched with high-quality nutrients. Perfect for the early stages of rearing.
Application and dosage
- Pour directly from the bag into the reef tank or refugium - no sieving necessary.
- The phytoplankton-containing saltwater can be dosed completely.
- 1 bag (500 ml) is sufficient for a reef tank of approx. 300 liters.
Establishing the zooplankton culture
To maintain the population in the long term, we recommend the daily addition of phytoplankton (e.g. our phytoplankton concentrate, the Hey-Hey-Pods or fresh Isochrysis/Chaetoceros). This ensures stable development of the microfauna, especially in the start-up phase. If zooplankton-eating species are kept permanently, we recommend adding zooplankton every 6 months.
