Aquacultured Tridacna

The Tridacna offered here come from an aquaculture farm in Micronesia. They are not only bred and exported for aquaristic purposes, but are also settled on site in the reefs in order to restock the natural population.

Important information on the care of Tridacna in reef tanks

Avoid placing Tridacna directly on the sand. Instead, choose a clam holder or rough coral rubble. The chosen spot should get a lot of light, while a moderate current is sufficient. Keep nettling corals far away from the Tridacna. We don´t recommend a socialization with cleaner wrasse or butterfly fish. In addition to its placement in the aquarium, the calcium supply is particularly important. Therefore, keep an eye on the alkalinity, magnesium and calcium and adjust them regularly.

Which Tridacna is right for me?

In addition to the appearance of each individual clam, the requirements and the expected final size play a role in the selection. Basically, aquacultured Tridacna are much more robust and therefore easier to care for than their wild counterparts. Tridacna crocea and Hippopus hippopus are particularly recommended for beginners. The former remains relatively small with an expected final size of 15 cm. The next clam on the size table is Tridacna maxima with a maximum of around 25 cm. Hippopus and Tridacna squamosa can grow similar in size, up to 40 cm. Tridacna derasa can do twice as much. However, giant clams grow very slowly in the aquarium and are 2-3 years old with a size of 3-6 cm.
