COOLING AQUARIUM - QUICK TIPS AND LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS
Especially on hot summer days, you should keep an eye on your aquarium thermometer regularly. If the water temperature rises to 28 °C or more, things become critical: oxygen saturation decreases, corals can bleach and bacterial infections become more likely.
Some corals, such as Zoanthus encrusting anemones, become increasingly closed when water temperatures rise above 26 °C. Reason enough, then, to think about cooling them in good time.
Zoanthus are among the corals that like it a little cooler (22-25 °C).
In an emergency and for smaller aquariums, bags filled with ice, PET bottles or cooling batteries can help. You can also put ice cubes made from osmosis water into your tank. To ensure a sufficient supply of oxygen, always run your skimmer and remove any existing covers. Mesh covers can also be used as a spring guard. The technical tank should also be left open and uncovered if possible to promote evaporative cooling.
In the long term, you can still upgrade technically:
#1 Fans, aquarium fans, cooling fans
The cooling effect occurs through evaporation. Aquarium fans are inexpensive to buy, can reduce the temperature by an average of 2-4 °C and are quickly put into operation. The disadvantage is that the salinity fluctuates more due to increased evaporation and you have to refill more osmosis water accordingly.
An aquarium fan is a cost-effective solution to lower the water temperature by a few degrees during the summer months.
#2 Cooling units, flow coolers
These devices work very effectively and can keep the temperature at a desired level. The disadvantages are the slightly higher purchase costs and the additional effort required to set them up (additional water connections to/from the aquarium).
#3 Air conditioning for room cooling
Here, too, the temperature is kept at a desired level in an energy-efficient manner. The disadvantages are the high purchase costs and the additional effort required for installation.
By the way: In order to keep the energy consumption of cooling systems as low as possible, you can regulate the operation using timers or thermostats.
