Sterile culture vs. feeding culture

While sterile cultures are guaranteed to be free from contamination and consist of 100% of a single phytoplankton species, feeding or working cultures can always contain small amounts of other phytoplankton species, for example.

Of course, we also try to avoid such mixtures in our feeding cultures as far as possible, but this cannot be excluded 100% in practice. Such cultures can still run steadily (e.g. 98 % Tetraselmis with 1 % Rhodomonas & 1 % Nannochloropsis each; the latter, however, never establish themselves) and can be fed and cultured normally. Nevertheless, under new cultivation conditions (different lighting etc.), the previously "suppressed" species may eventually prevail and at some point only Nannochloropsis, for example, will be cultivated.

Therefore, especially when cultivating sensitive phytoplankton species, it can make sense to use sterile cultures to start with.
